iKnee Recovery Journal (Day 6) – Eric Hansen

outside hospital day 6

Day 6 — Recovery Day 5 | Wednesday, August 5, 2026

“Hello, everybody, it’s Eric Hansen calling you live from iKnee Recovery Headquarters. It’s Wednesday evening, August 5th, and I’m five days out of surgery. I had a great day of rehab today. Clint came over to the house for a session, and we added a few more exercises while going back over what I’d already been doing, and I showed substantial improvement. He gave me my measurements; I’m now at -13 degrees in extension and 78 degrees in flexion. That’s another 4-degree gain in extension and another 4-degree gain in flexion. I love it!

My blood pressure was 132 over 62, so still within a normal range, and things are looking good. I used the therapy table again, which I’ll recommend to anyone going through this. The couch is too soft, the bed is too soft, and getting down on the floor is its own challenge while getting back up is even harder. But the therapy table has been fantastic. I keep it parked in the family room next to the couch and just hop on it to run through my exercises.

My full-length compression sock also arrived, so I’ve got that wrapped up high on my thigh now. This thigh looks pretty rough right now (about one and a half times the size of my other leg from the swelling), but it’s working and things are improving.

I’m trying to take it easy by focusing on small steps and letting the slight improvements build. One thing that was pretty exciting today, during my assisted walking with the walker, I’ve emphasized putting my heel down first and then rolling forward. Today I actually rolled all the way through to my toes, engaged the calf muscle, and pushed off like a normal stride. It may seem small, but it’s exciting for my recovery.

The pain in the quadriceps, which is where all the swelling and tightness comes from, feels like it’s slowly but surely going down. The compression sock is helping, and we’ll keep going from there.

Good day overall. I talked to Dr. Woodson a few times about different things. I mentioned the excitement around the surgery and recovery, and we also talked about the website we’re building to make sure everyone’s aligned. We talked a bit about some of the other surgeons involved too, which was fun.

So, just another slow-and-steady day. I went up and down the stairs easily. I came down once this morning after waking up, and I’ll only make that trip once in the morning and once in the evening. Sixteen stairs each way. Other than that, things are going well. The meds are working fine. I’m titrating down the Percocet while keeping up with the Journavx and the Aspirin. My appetite is still low, but I don’t mind losing a few pounds; it’s less stress on the knee during recovery, so I’ll keep that pace.

I’ve got good energy. I told Shannan I feel like I could work out, and she just said, “Take it easy, be careful.” Fair enough. Overall, things are good, and it was a good day. I’ll check back in with you all tomorrow. Talk to you soon! bye-bye.”
